Frank Cashen, Fresh-Up Freddie, and the Birth of the Orioles Cartoon Bird | Todd Radom Design

Today I learned...

Happy birthday, Kiko Garcia. In spite of an Orioles career OPS+ of 66 (including a mind-numbing 36 over 340 PAs in 1980) he performed well in the '79 postseason, slashing .400 / .429 / .600 in the World Series. On this date in 1969 the Mets shutout the O's 5-0 to take a 2-1 lead in the World Series. In '71 the Pirates shutout the O's 2-0 to take a 3-2 lead in the World Series. In '79 the O's hold a 1-0 lead until the 6th after which they meltdown to allow 7 runs to the Pirates, allowing the Bucs back into the Series, who are now down just 3-2. 1983 featured a more amenable result, as the O's defeat the Phillies 3-2 to take a 2-1 lead in the World Series.
