Brandon Workman is back with Boston after a brief trip to Pawtucket.
Brandon Workman's brief minor league retreat is over, as the Red Sox have him tabbed to start Thursday night's rubber match in their three-game set against the Yankees.
Workman has certainly been a disappointment to those expecting him to take hold of a rotation spot in Fenway. He's certainly held that slot for a fair bit of time this year, starting 12 games, but more because of a lack of alternatives than due to his performance. With a 4.93 ERA and unimpressive peripherals, Workman has looked every bit like your classic Quadruple-A #6 starter,
Speaking of #6 starters, look who's starting for the Yankees. Chris Capuano has looked better than Workman since heading to New York, putting up solid results with 19 earned runs in 43 innings of work on 41 strikeouts and eight hits. Obviously that means little to a Red Sox team that wasn't really going to get much out of his innings whether they were good or bad, but it still rankles a bit to see him doing it for the Yankees. Perhaps the Red Sox can change that tonight.
